Sorry

Yah, things have been pretty dry around here lately.

I won’t lie, things have been extremely busy around these parts lately. Work has been busy, LRR has been super busy and then all I want to do when I have some free time is relax and not even think about anything other than relaxing.

Last we talked I was heading over to Vancouver for the Olympics to take some photos. It was a load of fun. You can see some of my pictures to the right in my flickr widget.

Then I came home and dived into hockey and that keep me entertained and stressed out for a good week, then we won and it was amazing.

We moved Kathleen over to Victoria this past weekend, and then the next day we moved LRR to a new (awesome) office.

Thats a quick update. I will get back on this in the next week with a good, solid update!

Take me dancing.

So as you may or may not have heard the Winter Olympics are in full swing in Vancouver which as most of you know is just a short ferry ride from Victoria.

Now I have no opinion of the games one way or another. A lot of contraversy surrounds almost ever aspect of them and I would rather just not involve myself. The simple fact is there here, and regardless of the outcome we have to live with it. Could the city and the province be in debt for years to come? Maybe. Have people been displaced because of new constructions? Possibly. I really don’t know all the fine details and simply don’t care to really find out.

Truth is, I have seen a lot more positive come out of the games than the negative (which probably has everything to do with where I’m looking) but I don’t care. People all around me seem to be happy in some way or another that we have the games in our country, province, back yard and for my friends in Vancouver in their very own city. So I decided that I need to get in on some of this “Olympic Fever” Now money is rather tight with my upcoming trip to Boston/New York next month, so this Vancouver trip won’t be anything spectacular.

I’m going to hop on the ferry after work on Wednesday and head straight for downtown and check out the sights and sounds of the city. I won’t stay out to late cause I want to have a full day on Thursday. I have arranged to rent a very nice camera lens for Thursday, it’s one I have been wanting to buy for a while but it’s cost is more than I can justify right now. However renting it for the day will be 35 bucks which is well within my budget. (Nikon 17-55mm 2.8 for anyone interested)

Stephen Colbert is in town for the games, and is filming for his show Thursday morning at 9:15am so I fully plan on hitting that up and then wandering around all day and just taking pictures and taking it all in. There has been some talk about changing the access to the Olympic Torch, which is currently surrounded by a large chain link fence. I’m hoping they have that sorted out by Thursday some time so I can go check it out as it’s mean to be seen (If not, not big deal. I’ll still go down and check it out)

I also wanted to throw out a music selection for you guys. Now I wanna say, upfront, this is not going to be for everyone. And if you follow me on twitter than you might have already seen my link to this artist.

Meaghan Smith

Now here style of music isn’t much like anything thats currently out there. She has a great voice and matches it wonderfully with an amazing mix of music from the 30’s and 40’s but using modern technology to do so. I strongly urge you to check her out. Shes a Canadian act, which makes it that much better.

Anyways, I should do something that will either benefit the cleanliness of my house or the healthiness of my body.

Audio Books

I have been to the promised land and it’s name is Audible.com

http://www.audible.com

So one of my big goals for this year was to read a book a month. Now I’m not a big reader, not because I don’t like to read but the act of sitting down and reading for several hours at a time just doesn’t really do anything for me. Either way I finally got around to checking out Audible. Basically pay a set amount a month and you can download a book a month (or two books a month) and you keep them of course and can listen to them whenever you want.

So I downloaded Craig Ferguson’s book last week.

It is actually read by Craig himself which makes it even better. I would suggest you head over and check it out. Sign up and get a free book and then pay like 8 bucks a month for 3 months and then it goes up to 14.

Later Days.

February?

Jesus. How is January already done? This year needs to slow the hell down or the end of the world is going to come a lot quicker.

So we are a month into the new year. How are my goals doing? (cause I have stopped calling them resolutions)

I haven’t been blogging 3 times a week, but I’m shocked after 2 months this thing is still getting updated. I don’t know what to tell you. I just don’t have much to say right now. It might get better or it might not but mark my words, this thing will survive the year.

Listen to more podcasts? I have knocked this one out of the park! twit.tv has become a huge part of my day to day life and I still listen to the Smodcast on a weekly basis. I think I’m doing pretty well there.

Read a book a month. Well I read a book last month and in February I am going to try something a little different… http://audible.com  AUDIO BOOKS! I still haven’t decided what book to get this month but I will get on that later today. And then listen to it when I start going back to the gym.

My photography has been hurting. Me and Ashley are heading up to Tofino this weekend so we will both take up our cameras and get our shooting on.

My eating habits have been kinda meh. It’s not like I’m eating fast food everyday but I could be doing a lot better. I put off going back to the gym because I didn’t want to deal with the huge masses that appear on the first of January. Hopefully the crowds have died down a little bit and I can get back into the swing of things.

That’s it for now.

iPad Day!

* originally posted on the Loading Ready Run forums”

I want one for what it can be, not for what it currently is.

I think a huge amount of the disappointment today came from impossible expectations. The internet has been a blaze with rumors of what this thing will do. It was getting to the point that shy of blowing you and making a nice cup of coffee for afterwards was what this tablet was going to be capable of. There was just no way that it could have lived up to the hype.

BUT!

And this is a big but, at no point was I just blown away, there was never an AH-HA moment. It is, for the lack of a better definition, a giant iPod Touch. Now to be honest I don’t know what I wanted from this thing. I didn’t need a front facing camera for video chat, but at this point in the game and with the hardware this thing has, running multiple applications at once should simply be within it’s powers. I didn’t need facial recognition, or even a OLED screen but the support of flash in the browser or a SD card reader (and yes I know there is an adapter, but it should really just be built in) should have been included.

Something that I need to keep reminding myself (and everyone else should be aware as well) is that the iPad (BTW, horrible name) was essentially running a beefed up version of iPhone/iPod Touch 3.2. Now chances are it will ship with that OS but keep in mind that iPhone 4.0 (Software wise) is just around the corner. With the impending release of the new hardware this summer we should see an announcement of 4.0 either in the spring or at WWDC. Which very well might change a couple of my major problems with this device.

Mainly
-No Multitasking. This is the big one. If I’m chilling in bed I don’t want to have to close down Safari to check in on my Twitter/Facebook App. This fucker has a 1Ghz processor, some people are actually thinking it might be a dual core 1Ghz procssor saying they could see the single core version find it’s way to the new iPhone. I shouldn’t have to close down one app to open another. Hell, even if you limit it to 3-5 apps open at once I will be happy.

-Flash. Another big one. I heard Senior Jobs throw around the word “Netbook” a couple times today. And it’s fairly obvious thats the market they are gunning for (along with eBook readers) I WANT FLASH!

-SD Card slot. While it does have the option of grabbing the adapter for such tasks this very easily could have been put into the device, figure it out :P

Will I still buy one.

Probably.

What can I say, I’m a sucker for tech and thankfully they offer a WiFi only version. I already own an iPhone and I don’t need another monthly bill (UNLESS! I can get 200MB for 9.99 from Rogers, then I might just tack it on, but that will never, EVER happen)

I see this thing basically living on my bedside table. One of my new years resolutions has been to read more books and I think this might aid me in that mission. I don’t care about owning a physical version of the book and this might prompt me to buy a couple more books. I would also much prefer to take this one the road than my 2500 MacBook Pro. I have great use for it in town. Recording/Editing podcasts and the occasional LRR video but I am always so nervous when I travel with it. Thats not to say I wouldn’t be concerned with my tablet but I know I wouldn’t freak as much.

Basically I want to be able to take something on the road that I can surf the web, watch some movies and dump my pictures onto after a day of photography. This can do just that.

PS: It would be a fucking KILLER comic book reader.

Why I …

I stay till the end of the credits at Movie Theaters. It pisses off some people I occasionally see movies with but most of the time I don’t have people hounding me to get going.

I do this for a reason however, and it’s not because I don’t want to fight the crowds after the movie is over.

A movie isn’t an easy thing to make, even the really shitty ones. They require time and commitment from hundreds of people. Some might put in a days work, while other can spend weeks, months or even over a year (sometimes even longer) working on a major motion picture. When it comes down to it the actors will get a huge amount of credit, which they should and then credit trickles down the line. After the actors the director or writers will generally pick up whats left, but what about everyone else? How about the Director of Photography, First Unit AD, what about the sound mixer, even craft services. All of these people are listed at the end of the movie but who actually pays attention to them? Other than those post roll credits there is no other way to really see who was in charge of any given task in a movie and thats about all the credit they will ever get when it comes to the mainstream audience.

As someone who has been part of a creative team for 6 years now, I have come to appreciate every person in our crew and those that might just be able to help out every once in a while. LoadingReadyRun wouldn’t be what it is today without the hard work from Myself, Bill, Morgan, Matt, Jeremy, Kathleen, Graham, Paul, Tim and the countless numbers of other that have helped over the years. It’s the same with Hollywood flicks. People work their asses off to make a movie and I believe everyone deserves at least a little bit of credit, and the only way I can show that is to sit through the credits and actually watch them, read peoples names, see what they did to help get that movie made.

I don’t expect you all to start sitting through the full credits of every movie you see from now on, but next time you catch a flick at your local theater take a couple extra minutes, let the crowds clear and watch the credits.

Everything is Automatic

So I have been bad at keeping this thing update 3 times a week but I will settle with twice a week or even once a week, but let it be said I will NOT let this blog die.

The last couple of weeks have been really good, like really good. At the start of the year I went down to 4 days a week at my regular job and use Friday as a second day for the website. We have spent the last couple weeks building up a nice backlog of videos for various reasons but number one among them is our upcoming trip to Boston in March.

We are heading back east for PAX East this year and I am super stoked. I haven’t ever been to the East Coast before, in fact the farthest east I have ever been is Denver, sad I know. So Boston should be a whole new experience! After the con some of us have every intention of making the short trip down to New York for the work week to check out the city. I have wanted to go to New York for years so I think I actually may be more excited about New York than I am PAX.

Anyways, the day is moving along quicker than I would like and I need to get stuff down around here.

Later days.

Huh.

So I read all the issues of this today.

It’s pretty hard core. But really good, I suggest you give it a try.

Other than that things have been pretty quite around here.

My read a book a month thing is going pretty well. About half way through More Information than you require and so far it’s been pretty amusing. I should get around to reading his first book one of these days.

My eat right has been going really well. Been eating at home more and more and have noticed the difference in wallet, not so much on the scale but I need to get back to the gym for that sort of thing to actually happen.

LRR has officially started up with The Escapist and things have been going well so far. The first video was fairly well received but I think a few people were confused as to what exactly we do. Hopefully with this weeks video (which is one of the best videos we have done in a while, IMO) will cement that we do wildly different things week to week.

Later Days!

Rig-a-jig-jig

So it’s Tuesday, and I have very little to say.

I have spent a huge amount of my free time lately over at http://www.twit.tv. What Leo and his team over there do on a daily basis continue to amaze me. If you have any interest in the tech world and enjoy listening to smart, funny people chat about it in a very laid back environment then I suggest you head over. If you have no interest in that sort of thing than I would suggest you not go to that site and you might find entertainment over here.

Last week was my first week going down to 4 days a week at my Full Time Job. With the new contract at The Escapist starting up this week, it has afforded me the oppertunity to take Fridays off and spend them at the LRR office and work on stuff there. It was actually a really productive day considering who we are and what we normally do. This week should be even better and I am really looking forward to it.

I wish I had more to say today but I got nothing. I think I’m going to go read for a bit.

Later Days!

You take, you leave it, you run with it and go

How are you doing?

I will assume you said good/great/excellent/ect and will respond with “Good to hear”

So the other day I mentioned I was going to start my New Year reading with “The Book of Negroes” well that has changed. I remembered I had this book that I REALLY wanted to read so I have shifted gears from what I assume would have been a pretty intense book to this:

I have heard great things about this book and look forward to starting it tonight :) I’ll let you know how it goes.

Next!

This song.

The Zone was spinning Mountain Man on the Inbox a little while ago and my girlfriend really dug it. So I grabbed the album and after a couple listens this is far and away my favorite song from the bunch. It’s a neat band out of LA that has a bassist, vocalist-keyboardistand drummer. Check em out and let me know what you think.

NEXT!

Today marks the start of the Consumer Electronic Show in Sunny Las Vegas. It’s something that unless your a giant tech geek like myself won’t really interest you that much. I suggest if you want to see whats going on you stay tunned to engadget.com or follow the awesome team over at twit.tv. They will be broadcasting live throughout the show at their stage and I will be tunning in as often as possible.

So far this is one of the cooler things that has come out of the show.

It’s a tablet/netbook. Pretty neat stuff. Check out some more info on it here

The show is both a blessing and a curse all at once. On one hand I get to see all these neat new gadgets that are coming out but because of where I live (Canada) chances of seeing anything within this year is slim to none. Oh well, such is the price to pay for free health care and whatever else this place offers me :)
